Year 5

January 2024

Year 5 have been introduced to vector drawings and we began to understand that they are made up of simple shapes and lines. The children used the main drawing tools within the Google Drawings application to create their own vector drawing of a building. The children discussed how vector drawings differ from paper-based drawings.

Our new microbits have arrived.

October 2023

In Year 5, we have been exploring the logo language in Coding this half term. On Wednesday, the children created programs that have a repetition command inside another repetition command. We created some interesting and artistic patterns using this nested repetition.

This week, Winstanley connected the peripherals needed to use a Raspberry Pi computer.  They considered the purpose for each one:

  • Power cable – connects the Pi to the electricity
  • Monitor – is the output, it shows us what it’s doing
  • Keyboard – is the input, it lets us use the Pi
  • Mouse – is an alternative input
  • SD card – is the memory – all of the software and programs that tell it what to do are saved on there.

They explored the programs available and particularly enjoyed the Raspbian version of Minecraft.

February 2023

This week Year 5 created vector drawing images of the Caroline Haslett Logo. They were able to showcase a number of skills learned across the unit: Copy and Paste, Select and Zoom, Shapes and Fill Colours, Border colours and Styles, Layering and Grouping.
