Ralph from Year 4‘s family visited this week bringing in his Formula 1 Race-car simulator. Using the simulator, the children were able to cruise virtually around the Silverstone Circuit. The simulator created an accurate realistic experience with three screens and a car frame including a replicated steering wheel and matching brake pressure pedals. Ralph is able to complete the 6km circuit in an incredible 47 seconds.

This week in their Computing lessons, Year 6 have been exploring how search engines rank results. The children became human search engines giving their search engine a name such as ‘Ethabang’ and ‘Slothplex’. We crawled eight webpages and ranked them according to how often the word appeared in the heading, subheading or main body of the text.

We used Google Custom Search to compare our results to how Google would rank these pages. It was a very time consuming task and it certainly helped us appreciate how search engines sort through over 50 billion webpages in just a fraction of a second.

We have been celebrating Christmas in Computing by creating a holiday tree. We used Python to create these in Trinket.

On Monday 11th September, Year 6 we were visited by Chris and Adam from McAffe. We learned how easy it is to create fake images and discussed information that should be shared online.

Year 6 are using software and digital devices for recording sound. Based around the theme of a Radio Station, this unit is designed to encourage a creative approach that includes interviewing, making adverts and using jingles. Other software is incorporated where children write scripts and design additional advertising for their Radio Station. Opportunities are included for children to present, listen, review and evaluate their own content as well as professional and commercial examples, plus those created by their peers.
